Had a meeting with KD at Dollar today after work. Over cocktails we discussed the The Smoking Man DVD and the rest of the package. KD corrected my spellings and syntax errors (she gave me a star and a smiley face) and agreed on a time plan to hand everything over to PW next week.

Meeting with LM of VD Ltd (unfortunate initials). Yesterday I emailed him a format for a TV program called Right Time/Wrong Face. I wrote the treatment the other night at 3.30am when I couldn’t sleep. A new take on celebrity and reality shows. I think he liked the idea and may take it to Cannes Television Festival on Sunday. The meeting progress from a coffee in Brick Lane to his office and finally his apartment. A good four hours catching up and discussing The Smoking Man at length.

My meeting with CA of S2S never happened but we rescheduled for next week.

Back up to Northampton to nail the edit of The Smoking Man. With copious cups of tea we manage to do it in good time and add an interactive element to it. I get back to London with the aim to relax for the evening. It is supposed to be a bank holiday weekend after all.

NS back on board with camera and tri-pod and off to the South Bank to get the long moody shots we require to finish the edit. I spend the afternoon hanging out of the window in a Soho production company’s office secretly filming smokers on the street. I feel like a peeping tom or purvey spy (People watching, don’t you just love it!)

Day two back at PM HQ. Boring SMS training today, I definitely can’t take any more of this. The team has been informed we will be selling Special Edition stock directly to On-Trade customers from now on. Everyone left early and NJ wasn’t in today so at the end of play I approached LR. She said she was to busy when I requested a meeting but agreed to talk on the way to the car park. So I told her in the car park I was quitting, I was pro smoking bans and do not want to sell cigarettes.

1^st of a two-day meeting at PM HQ. Introduced to Marlboro Blend 28 and discussed marketing strategy with major blitz on London. Product is designed to capture B&H market by appealing to smokers of blended tobacco instead of Marlboros traditional Virginia tobacco.

First look today at a PM vending machine that operates with credit cards. This allows the company not only to track sales, but also gather customer information. Vending operators will have direct competition from manufacturer soon On-Trade. They are not going to be happy!

I had my resignation letter in my brief case and was going to quit today but after the meeting had wound up, my line managers were engaged in some debate and looked stressed. I didn’t have the heart to drop the bombshell on them. Typical, always thinking about everybody else accept me. Well, there’s always tomorrow.

Headed up to Northampton early to start work on the edit of the The Smoking Man DVD. Recorded the voice-over track. (I should have learned the lines instead of reading them – I don’t like the way I sound and I can tell when listening back that I’m reading the lines). We thought we had more than enough material for a teaser film but were lacking a lot of shots. Admittedly, it was planned to be ninety seconds long but is now looking at coming in at over three minutes. We arrange to shoot the following weekend and this time use a tri-pod instead of the shoot and run guerrilla style.

I went out early with a camera before the street cleaners had been round cleaning up the (cigarette) litter left from Saturday night. In Soho it’s a twenty-four hour operation. We could save a fortune on Council tax bills if everyone put their rubbish in a litterbin or took it home with them. I headed to Hackney and shot loads of shit.

(Some people lie in the gutter and look up at the stars; I grovel around the gutter with a camera in the name of art)

Picked NS up at Euston and headed to the South Bank to film opening sequence of The Smoking Man Teaser DVD. Only got a couple of hours in before dropping him of at the Tate. Only trouble was it was the wrong Tate Gallery, so he was late. Doh!

January 2005 Perry

Happy New Year and back to work! I’m on a big come down. Missing my buds, the sun, the beach of San Diego, LA and of course the honeys. (Now I know what the Beach Boys were singing about when they sang ‘Californian Girls’). Plastic Fantastic!!!!

I really got to get out of this job soon with PM. I’m having a big problem representing the brand and if someone wants to know about negative subjects of the industry I feel obliged to tell them the true facts. I’m getting to be a walking encyclopaedia on the subject.

As for the proposed forthcoming ban on smoking in bars etc. bring it on!
